Remote Access Device

The RAD is a RADical new device that provides serial terminal access to a remote host via a keypad and an LCD. This low cost unit not only provides terminal access but also control functions through ASCII escape sequences sent from the host. The RAD comes optionally equipped with two relay outputs and an opto input providing the control functionality. Also available in a 5.25" drive bay version, known as the BayRAD.

A typical RAD application might involve automated building access. The host would prompt the user through the RAD's LCD for an Access Authorization Code. The user would enter the Authorization Code required to enter the building using the keypad. The RAD device would send this information back to the host unit. The host unit would then determine if the Authorization Code was correct. If the Code was incorrect the host could issue an audible warning through the RAD's on-board beeper and reprompt the user for the required Authorization Code. If the Code was correct the host could unlock the door using one of the RAD's on-board relays. Up to 128 RADs can connect to a single host, enough to cover a very large building.

The great thing about the RAD is you can use whatever host you're comfortable with, from PICs to PCs, as long as it has a serial port (RS232/422/485), you're set. No programming of the RAD is necessary, just simply send it ASCII data and it displays characters on the LCD. Enter data from the keypad and ASCII characters are returned to the host. ASCII escape sequences control the relays, LEDs, beeper and returns the opto inputs status. The RAD's small size and low cost make it the ideal solution for Remote Access applications.
