Firewall-In-A-Box (FIB)

Enclosed Firewall-in-a-Box

Firewall-In-A-Box (FIB)

(Shown with Power Supply Not Attached)

The EMAC FIB is a self-contained solution for securely sharing a modem or Ethernet Internet connection, such as a cable modem or digital subscriber line (DSL). Included in the FIB are provisions for dynamically assigning IP addresses to client machines (DHCP), and caching DNS service. Also included is the ability to forward incoming ports so that Internet servers can be securely placed behind the firewall. Configuration is done via a simple menu-driven system. Like the SIB, it is based upon a custom GLIBC 2.2 Linux distribution, with 2.4.10 kernel.

Configuring a UNIX-like operating system as a firewall can be difficult and time-consuming task. Traditionally, configuration often involved building a custom kernel and editing numerous configuration files. To simplify this process, the FIB includes a menu-based configuration utility, which is accessible locally via terminal or remotely via telnet. This utility allows the user to configure serial ports (for modems), terminal ports, point-to-point (dialup) Internet connections, LAN and Ethernet settings, and firewall and port forwarding configurations.

Dial In/Out Server and Client

The FIB includes software and scripts which allow it to both dial out, and to answer incoming modem connections. Connections may be remote terminal sessions (similar to telnet), or PPP connections. Dial-in terminal sessions allow the user to configure and manage the FIB as if they were at the FIB's own keyboard. The PPP connection allows a user to use the FIB as a dial-in server. The FIB may also dial out, either on command or as part of an automated script.

Periodic Command Scheduler (CRON)

The FIB comes with the standard UNIX periodic command scheduler, CRON. This is a program which runs in the background, executing specified commands at specified times. Programs can be executable binaries or shell scripts. CRON is configured from the main system configuration utility.

Caching Domain Name Server

The FIB comes with a standard BIND version 8 domain name server, already configured as a caching nameserver. This helps to speed Internet access by remembering addresses of frequently visited sites.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Server

Included is a DHCP server, so clients connected to the FIB can be automatically configured using settings configured through the FIB's setup menu.

Switchable Telnet and FTP Servers

In order to ease configuration, telnet and FTP servers have been included. These services can be easily switched off for security.
